Lobo men second, women sixth inWinning performances by LuisUresti and the 4x400 relay team helped Sul Ross State University place second in the American Southwest Conference men’s track meet at Abilene April 21-22.The Lady Lobos placed sixth in the seven-team competition.McMurry outdistanced the rest of the field in both the- men’s and women’s meets, with respective scores of 329 and 286 points. Coach Francis Jones’ men’s team tallied 109 points, while the women totaled 22.Uresti (Brownsville) won the triple jump with a leap of 46 feet, one and one-half inches, barely missing the NCAA Division III provisional qualification of 46-6.The 4x400 relay team of Matt Horton (Red Oak), A1 Ornelas (Odessa), Marcos Rodriguez (Alpine) and Jaime Juarez (Odessa) circled the track in 3:21.99, nearly six seconds ahead of its closest competitor. The tandem fell short of the provisional qualifying standard of 3:17.64.Sul Ross had a host of second place finishers as well, including LaGwenna Morrow (Palestine), with a time of 2:34.66; Emmanuel Ajiodo (Houston), 21.76 seconds in the 200 meters, 49.89 in the 400 meters and a member of the 4x100 relay team with Horton, BrandonLangdon (Sabinal) and Keith Frazier (Corpus Christi), 42:29 seconds; Mike Harris (El Paso), hammer throw, 152 feet, 5 inches (which eclipsed the former meet record of 139-8); Scott Kissee (San Antonio), javelin, 172-5; Lavius Taylor (Midland), long jump, 21-10; and Aaron Swartzfager (Monahans), shot put, 45-3 1/2.In women’s competition, Audrey Glasscock placed fifth in the javelin, 95-2; Jennifer Shuttlesworth (Lubbock) finished fifth in both the 1500 meters (6:06.23) and 3000 meters (13:00.48); Melanie Marshall (Kingsland) was sixth in the javelin, 83-2; Amanda King (Burleson) placed sixth in the triple jump,ASC track31-9 1/2; and the 4x100 meter relay team of Morrow, Glasscock, King and Shannon Hall (Snyder) and finished third in 54.51.Other men’s placewinners were: Kissee, fifth in the high jump, 6-0, and sixth in the 110 mete* high hurdles,. 16:08; Ornelas, third in the 400 meters, 50.24; Jimmy Lopez (Fort Stockton), third in the 400 intermediate hurdles, 58.11, and sixth in the high jump, 6-0, Rodriguez, fourth in the 400, 50.78; Frazier, fifth in the 100 meters, 10.97; Horton, sixth in the 400, 51.09; Swartzfager, fifth in the discus, 122-8; and Uresti, sixth in the long jump, 21-4.
