From Charleston Eleven West , Virginia high school students, including three Charleston students, were named winners of the National Merit $1,000 Scholarships. Deborah L. Conway, Richard L. Garrison and Robert Dennis Steed were’ among the 1,000 high school seniors named winners in the second of three major an nouncements of Merit Scholar ship winners made this year. Miss Conaway is a student ‘at Charleston High School where she is a member of the Spanish and Broadcasting clubs and on the staff of the yearbook .and newspaper. She is also a mem ber of the Charleston Council for Drug Information. Miss Conaway is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Cona way of 2009 Hart St. She plans to, major in psychology in col lege. A student at Stonewall Jack son High School, Garrison is the son of Mr. and’ Mrs. D. Lewis Garrison of 1554 Sum mit’ Dr. He is salutatorian of his class, a member of the National Honor Society, Quill Scroll, the concert and marching bands, and business manager of the newspaper. Garrison plans to major in ‘premedicine at college. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil liam H. Steed, Steed is a senior at George Washington High School. He plans a college ma jor in electrical engineering. Steed is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Kanawha Radio Club, school assistant scoutmaster and he participated in the National Sci ence Foundation Summer Pro gram, sponsored ‘by the Univer sity of Virginia. ~~ THE OTHER state winners) were Vasyl“Warvario ‘of Dan iels, a student at Shady. Spring High School; ‘Linda J.,Ozolins of Fairmont,’ a’ student at Fair mont Senior High; ‘Jane R. Levy of Huntington,a student at Phil lips ‘Exeter “Academy, in New, Hampshire. James Porterfield of Mar tinsburg, ‘a student at Mer cersburg Academy in Pennsyl vania; Matthew Barton,Mor gantown High School; Andrew T. Hicks, Princeton High School;, Marialette Harman, Welch High School; and Pat E. Lupinetti of Wellsburg, a student, at Brooker School. The 11 state winners were chosen, from more than 14,400 finalists in the Merit program.: Each winner will receive a$1, 000 scholarship after he enrolls next, fall in an accredited col lege or university. .
