No previous experience in playing is needed.The schedule hasn't been made, but a game with Westhampton College is certain.All girls planning to go out lor softball met Miss McKennev in the WytheJ • *gymnasium Tuesday two weeks ago and signed up for their desired positions.There were twenty girls, and Miss McKennev said that except for a few more outfielders she had enough candidates.The team will practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Hotchkiss field.Late Rally Brings Victory To Thomas Jefferson High; Bradley Leads in HittingBy virtue of a big seventh inning rally, Thomas Jefferson defeated John Marshall in a city championship game 14 to 11, Wednesday a week ago. Gerard Bradley pounded out four hits for six times at the plate.Justices, AheadJohn Marshall scored three runs the first inning, knocking Cordoza, Thomas Jefferson's southpaw hurler, out of the box. Thomas Jefferson scored three runs in its half of the first inning, tying the score. From the first inning to the seventh, the Justices built up the score to ten runs to Thomas Jefferson’s four.Presidents RallyWith two outs in its half of the seventh, Thomas Jefferson started a rally, which didn’t stop until the score •was 11 to 10, in favor of Thomas Jefferson. Salyers went off the mound *0 first base, and Melvin Harris pitched the remainder of the game. Thomas Jefferson scored three more runs in the eighth, thus making the score 14 to 10. The Justices rallied in the ninth, but made only one run. By losing this game, the Justices moved to the bottom of the standings.Gerard Bradley was the leading hitter, getting four safe hits for six trips «to the plate. George Hamilton, right fielder for the Blue and White, hit a ball that could have been a home run had he not failed to touch first base.Scores Two Runs in Eighth To Win; Late Justice Rally Fails; Mallory Hits TwoPetersburg High, leading in the Central District loop, put out the Justices' hopes of tying them for the lead, by defeating the Blue and White 4 to 2, last Monday in a close game, with Clyde Mallory the only Justice to get a hit.Petersburg pushed across two runsin the fourth to take the lead and■scored two more in the eighth. John Marshall scored two runs in its half of the eighth on «an error by Williams, Petersburg conterfielder.The Justices started another rally in the ninth. With two men out, Stuart Reynolds, pinch-hitting for Melvin Harris, Justice pitcher, got on first on an error. Mallory singled and Bradley made first on an error. Then the rally ended with George Hambleton popping up to shortstop.Randy Mallory, Petersburg pitcher who took over the mound duties in the second inning, allowed only five hits. Mallory, Bradley, Salyers, and Harris got them.Ashland High Wins From Justices, 9-6HopewellBows To JusticesAshland High School defeated the John Marshall team 9 to 6 Friday a week ago, to make a clean sweep of the games played against the Justices so far.Trailing 9 to 3 going into the last half of the ninth inning, the Jayem lads pushed across three runs. John Marshall’s hitting was led 'by Woody Hancock, rightfielder, who knocked out a single and a double, both hits scoring runs. Garfield Salyers and Gerard Bradley both got one safety for three trips to the plate, while Jimmy Lumpkin got one safety for four trips to the plate. Mert Jones, Gerard Bradley, and Luddy Marsh each drove out two safe hits.Cary Williams and Melvin Harris had the pitching chores for the winners, and Stuart Reynolds and Luddy Marsh held down catchers’ duties.Win Game First InningJohn Marshall won the game in the first inning by going on a five-run rampage and then getting two runs in each of the next two innings. Lumpkin then stole to third, and it looked as if he were going to score, thus tying up the game, but the next man up was put out and the side was retired. Earl Barnhill was given credit for the win, and Harold Hopkins blame for the loss.Robert Thomas was the catcher for Company F, and Melvin Harris was the catcher for Company D.Company D Beats Boys of CCompany D defeated Company C. last Sunday at Hotchkiss field -by a score of 9 to 2.Jack Stroud was the pitcher for the winner and Melvin Harris, the catcher; while Byrd Nunnally was the pitcher for Company C and Fred Schmitt, the catcher.Later the same day Company E overran Company F by a score of 8 to 7.Company A defeated the supportersK By DYSON and DICKERSON }/ • ' *Elmer Manly Challenor and George (Bubber) Atkinson, graduates of John Marshall, have returned to the city on a leave from the Coast Guard. They were sworn in, in January. Both boys were .in Company C, and Elmer played end on the Blue and White football team.X * * * *Corporal Earl Howell, an alumnus of John Marshall, has had some experience in a Rome golf tournament. The course was of coarse grass and full of hazards, mostly creeks.When Earl was at Jayem he was one of the best young golfers in the city.Granby High of Norfolk defeated John Marshall High's track squad last Saturday a week ago by the score of 99 to 18.Granby took first place in aill events and second place in most of them.
