Howard Chandler Christy, the ar tist and illustrator, whose war post ers have been of vastly material as sistance to the various branches of the service in their recruiting cam paigns, has just finished another one for the Marine Corps. It shows a jaunty young maid, attired in the marine uniform, buckling on a sword and other belligerent paraphernalia, preparatory to rushing into the fray. In the distance are seen thousands of marines rushing to the front line. The slogan, “If You Want to Fight Join the Marines,” tells in language as graphic as the picture the his tory of the brave men who are under the command of Major General George Barnett. Christy is telling the following war story which was originally narrated to him by Lieu tenant Richee, of the French army: After a charge upon the German lines by the French troops, a soldier of La Belle France saw the body of a German infantryman hanging from the barbed wire barrier. He also no ticed that on the feet of the German was a very good pair of shoes. His own footgear, being much dilapidat ed, the Frenchman approached the corpse of his enemy and was unlac ing one of the shoes when the Teu ton’s pedal extremity wiggled vig orously. The pollu started back in amazement and cried: ‘That is just like a German. You cannot trust them even when they are dead.”
