31TOO THIN, THOMAS*The appointment of Mr. Lon Lugged, the popular Fourth street barber, as a Republican delegate from the second wartj, is the very essence of richness. Mr. Lugged is a very worthy gentleman, and one in all respects as well qualified to represent the ward in convention as any other man in the delegation. But the fact intrudes itself upon us that Mr. Lugged has been a resident of this county from his boyhood, and has been a voter here since he attained his majority. Why has he never been placed upon a delegation before? Why is it, that of the 100 colored voters in this county, who have been faithfully voting the Republican ticket, not one has ever before received the slightest recognition from the Republican party? We have a very distinct recollection of the Journal having gone out of its way r J on two different occasions to wantonly 1 and willfully insult Mr. Lugged by } ■ the publication of the meanest and most ! contemptible of petty falsehoods. The articles in question were not only personal insults to Mr. Lugged, but were direct flings at his whole race, since he was shamefully lampooned as “a saddle colored manipulator of the razor,” The Journal ring has never missed an opportunity to impress upon the colored citizens of this county, that they are good enough to vote the ticket, but good for nothing more.Mr. Bringhurst is now a candidate for j Congiess, and he knows that he cannot be elected without the active support of the colored voters. He knows, too, that the colored brother has been stood upon about as much as he will submit to, and in order to appear friendly, while he is at heart hostile, he has Mr. Dugged placed ! upon the delegation. It is a Bringhurst i trick, and like all tricks of that shameless trickster is shamelessly transparent. Whether it will succeed or not depends entirely upon the manhood of Mr. Lugged. We have always regarded him as a high type of manly courage, and a gentleman to whom his people can point with pride. If we are not more mistaken in the man than we have ever been in any one, he will resent Mr. Bringhurst’s assumed ownership of him in a way not to be mistaken. Our readers will remember while p ih e ach oolbill, framed and introduced in the Senate by Mr. Lykeman, and warmly advocated bp him and other Democrats, was under discussion, the Journal of this city advised the Legislature to “stop its nigger foolishness, and go to work at something that would be of benefit to the people.” Does Mr. Bringhurst stand by the Journal record, or does he, now that he wants colored votes, repudiate it? It looks as if tricky Thomas has outtricked himself.*a1It-hnXA
