LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. (Editor Sun.] In a communication(?) to the Repub lican of yesterday, signed “Spectator,” I see only one paragraph that interests me. I did feel some interest in re late city election. I was glad when I h that there was to be a republican ticket, but I thought the call was made in a mysterious manner.Handbills were printed, but only distributed in certain localities, and a little notice stuck in a local column of the Republican. But it did get to be under stood by quite a number of republicans that the caucuses were to be held, and the consequence was that the convention wasn’t straight packed by the originators, although they had a nice work in y. One West Side gentleman , a friend who was in office, and whom this Greteangh desired should be re-elected. I though he was a democrat, he had no prospect of carrying the democratic city convention, but, having already been nominated by the independents, and being a strong and popular candidate, he had determined to run on the independent ticket and on the stump. But, of course, the form of an endorsement by a repub lican convention would help some, and this West Side gentleman got it for him. A convention was called ‘and ‘there was loud talk about Raynor for OHNY Slants and a republican ticket, except that Gorges must be on to draw votes from the demo crats, and when the delegates named in “Spectator’s” letter, viz.:. Otis Hardy, W. B. Hawley, G. M. Radcliffe, Dr. Campbell, Chas. Pettigrew, Malcolm Smith and others, who were there as republicans, made an effort to act consistently and nominate a republican, they found it had been ‘already fixed and that Messrs. Kay nor, Acker and Bush were put on merely to steady the.Gorges kite. We don’t blame Mr. Gorges nor his friend for using the republican paw to pull their chestnuts out of the fire. But alas for a party that can be so easily handled. Let such men speak low about rings, cliques, etc. Now we have a republican commit tee. Let them hereafter call conventions, and let them advertise them in all the republican papers, and let all republicans be invited to attend the caucuses, and let republican tickets be nominated, and then if we have a bad city government we will hold the democratic party responsible. .
