Bounded on the North by Vigo, East by Clay and Greene, and South by Knox counties, and West by the Wabash river. Is in the southwest part of the State and Sixth Congres sional District, and contains about 445 square miles. Population in 1860, 15,064—1870, 18,352. Nine civil townships. Sullivan the county seat. Present population, about 1,860. The county was named after. Gen. Sullivan, of the Revolution, who was intimately associated with Gen. Knox, and Sullivan being taken from the Territory of Knox, was thus named. The first settlement in Sullivan county commenced at Carlisle, in the year 1803.
