Lowrey Dept of English On May 1, Euclora Welty, one of America's foremost contemporary writers, will speak in the Aula at 8:00 p.m., on a subject of her own choosing.Miss Welly’s collection of short stories, A Curie in of recn, made literary history in 1941 --due as much, perhaps, to the fact that Katherine Anne Porter insisted on doing an extremely complimentary introduction, as to the worth of the stories, which was very high.Since the appearance of that first volume of short stories (her stories had appeared in magazines like the Southern Remeto as early as 1936), Miss Welty has written a long line of distinguished work. ExperimentationBut simply to catalogue Miss Welly'‘s books would be to leave unsaid what is most important about her. She has been, ever since her first volume of short stories, one of those few writers who are important as experimenters. She has changed the face of the short story, and she has changed it for good. The period around 1940 was one in which all sorts pi profound changes were occurring, both in the world and in literary values (it is hardly necessary to point out that the two are integrally bound together; it is probably necessary to point out that you can frequently tell a lot about the nature of the change in the world through looking at what happened to the literary values). And in one sense.
