USED AS LODGING HOUSEThe restaurant bulildin^ was used as a lodging house and some eighteen or twenty persons slept on the upper floor. These Wilson awakened immediately and apprised them of their great danger, also awakening the pro-prietor. Nelson Watts. Rushing down stairs again lie turned in the alarm and the blowing of the lire whistles and the ringing of tlie fire bell aroused the whole city and the department was on the scene in a remarkably short time. By this time the building was a seething furnace and,all that could be done was to coniine the Are to the restaurant building and save adjacent property and assist in the saving of lives.Ladders were secured and placed at the windows and dry goods boxes plied up in other places and some thrilling escapes were made, many of the occupants of the building jumping from the second story to the sidewalk below. jSMOKE CONFUSED INMATESDaniel Carroll, the young man who lost his life, and Joseph Ryan, who is today hovering between life and death, roomed together on the second floor near the front of the building. When the alarm was given Carroll was the first up in the room and started for tjjie front stairs. Descending the stairs and opening Hie door he was met with a burst of flame and a cloud of smoke which tilled the stairway. Ryan who was behind called to him to come back,'but Carroll, confused by the smoke and severely burned from inhaling the fire, did not heed the summons but rushed on to his doom.Ryan turned back and regaining the second floor broke out a front window and jumped to the ground. He was terribly burned and was suffering intensely. He was taken to a nearby drug store and medical aid rendered at once, being removed .shortly afterwards to the hospital.SOME THRILLING ESCAPESFollowing Carroll several others jumped out of the same window to the sidewalk, and another broke out a window on the side and managed to f escape between the burning wall and that of the building adjacent. A woman occupant managed to escape down the back stairway and ran out in the alley with her night apparel afire. The flames were extinguished by tome of the throng of bystanders and clothing furnished her and several other women and children who escaped with but their night clothes.On account of a pile of debris and .broken glass in the rear of building
