Vol. XXIII No. 21BSONE LIFE LOSTIN BURNING OFRESTAURANTDaniel Collins Burned to Death in Fire Early Last Monday day Which Destroyed Avenue CafeJOSEPH RYAN SERIOUSLY BURNEDBeresford Young Man Barely Escapes From Burning Building With His LifeFIE CAUSED BY EXPLOSION Of LAMP vScattered Oil Caused Building to Burn Rapidly, $15,000Insurance CarriedOne man burned to death, another receiving iujurles which may yetprove fatal, and several others injured more or less seriously were the terrible results of the burning of the Watt Avenue restaurant early last Monday morning. The fire was caused by the explosion of a gasoline lighting apparatus and the building was completely gutted in less than an hour. The monetary loss is estimated atMf000, with insurance less than $1,500.The restaurant was kept open ah night and between twelve and one o’clock Ray Wilson, an employee, attempted to adjust one of the tamps, which was not burning right, when it suddenly exploded, scattering the fluid in all directions which at once became ignited. In a few moments the whole of the interior of the lower floor was ablaze and young Wilson rushed up the stairs to warn sleeping lodgers.it was not safe for anyone to jump from ( the back windows, and a pile of dry-1 good boxes, hastily erected, saved more i than one life, willing assistance being I given to every one of the unfortunate ^ occupants of the burning buildings Overcoats were stripped off by the spectators and shoes loaned to the almost nude refugees and everything possible done to aid the firemen in their superhuman work.LIVI WIRES ENDANGERED WORK.The fire caused the breaking of many electric light wires and these were ever a menace of the firemen and their helpers, many receiving seri-ovs shocks from coming in contact with them. Warning was given of the wires, but it was impossible to always keep out of their way. Falling timbers also endangered the workand the toppling walls for a time made is impossible to dp anything to check the flames. Tire water pressure slackened for a few minutes at one time, but for all the difficulties that encountered them the members of the volunteer tire department did well in confining the tire as well asthey did.Adjacent property suffered slightly, however, from the intense heat, the tire having been one of the hottest in the town's history. All the plate glass in the Breen brick block adjacent to the south was broken out and some glass in the Sauer-Breen block adjacent was broken.
