I extract tie following from a Scotch paper:—Lately atreastirerehip of a County Court became vacant; there were two candidates, both having especial claims, and each supported by powerful influence. A serious quarrel arose between these two claimants and their backers; at last it was determined to refer the dispute to Lord Palmerston, “Oh,” said the jaUnty Premier when he heard the case, “ a County Court treaaurership vacant, is there ? Why, that is the very thing I want for a friend of mine. The best way, therefore, to settle the dispute, as both of you seem to have claims equally good, is for me to take the office and give it to my friend and this he did; he presented tbis nice little post of £700 a year to the Hon. Mr. Ashley, son of Lord Shaftesbury, and grandson of Lady Palmerston. As Lord Dundreary says—“ Thath good, isthn’t it ? ” Nothing better than this happened since the lawyer took the oyster and gave each of his clients—a shell.
