Page 4, The Skyline, April 24, 1986 The Sul Ross Lobos closed out their home season by mauling the Schreiner College Mountain eers by a combined total of 39-7 during their four-game series at Kokernot Field. The four-game sweep brought the Lobos one weekend closer to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District 8 playoffs. With a little luck in the final series in Lubbock this week, the Lobos could enter the playoffs as the No. 3 team in the district. The Lobos won 8-2, 10-0, 8-2 and 13-3. Rowdy Brown led the Lobo hurlers in the Schreiner series with a three-hit shutout in the second game Friday for his third win of the season. Dennis Taylor opened the Sul Ross show by allowing only two runs on six hits in the seven inning contest. Jimmy Morris continued his long-ball hitting spree by pounding a first-inning homer for the Lobos’ first run of the series. He added another home run in the second game to push his home run hitting streak to six consecutive games. George Cantu and Rod Venner added RBIs in the first inning to give the Lobos a 4-0 lead. The bottom half of the Schreiner batting order tagged Taylor for three consecutive hits in the fourth, good for both of the Mountaineer runs. Sul Ross responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Russell McGuairt led off the inning with a single. Venner followed with his second hit of the game before Jeff Parnell drove in both players with a two- RBI double to center. The Lobos picked up one more run in the fifth inning after a Wenner walk and a Schreiner error. Taylor then retired the Mountaineers in order to take the win. Brown had the Sul Ross defense behind him all the way as the Lobos converted possible miscues into outstanding second effort defensive plays to cut down three possible runs on the base paths. In the first inning, Brown gave up two of his three hits to SC. Mountaineer left fielder Tony Faz tried to score from second base on the second hit of the inning, but center fielder Arturo Moreno’s throw to the plate was in time and Bob Jarrett made the tag. In the third inning, the Lobos turned two errors into two outs with second-effort defense. David Garcia led off the SC third with a sharp hit to Venner at third. Venner’s throw to Pannell at first was wild, and Garcia tried to make it to second. Pannell played the ball off the screen and threw Garcia out at second. The next Mountaineer got on base on a Cantu error at shortstop. The runner advanced to second on a passed ball and tried to take third when a throw by Jarrett went into center. Moreno, backing up the play at second, threw another strike to Venner at third who tagged the runner for the second out of the inning. Sul Ross bounced back with four runs in the third inning for the first runs of the game. The Lobos loaded the bases with a Jarrett walk, a Cantu single and a Schreiner error on a Morrne grounder. Ryan and designated hitter Darrell Holmes picked up the RBIs with a single and double respectively. Brown retired the Mountain eers in the fourth and fifth innings before the Lobos applied the pressure and the 10-run rule with six runs in the fifth. Moreno picked up the first RBI with a double after a Cantu Walk. Moreno was thrown out when he tried to stretch a double into a triple. Morris followed with his 13th homer of the season. Two walks and a McGuairt single loaded the bases for Venner who took ball four for a walk to score Ryan. Holmes scored from third on a wild pitch with Pannell at the plate. Pannell then struck out for the second out of the inning. Jarrett came to the plate and ended the contest on the 10-run rule with a single to center field. Jeff Price controlled the Mountaineers Saturday, allow ing just two runs on five hits while recording five strike outs. Price leads the Lobo pitching staff with 45 strike outs. The Lobos started fast with two runs in the first. Sul Ross picked up three more runs in the third for a 5-0 lead. A two-out homer by Kevin Jones in the fourth gave Schreiner their only runs. Moreno finished the Sul Ross scoring with a three-run homer. Shay Morris went four complete innings of a no-hit pitching in the finale, and the Lobo offense gave the freshman pitcher a 9-0 cushion from which to work. S. Morris upped his record to 6-4 for the year and his 40 strikeouts in 45 innings. Reliever Michael Gonzales allowed the three Schreiner runs in the sixth on a base on an error and three consecutive hits. With the score 9-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Lobos ended the contest with a four-run rally. Ryan led off with a triple but was almost stranded after two Lobo outs. Venner walked, bringing Pannell to the plate. Pannell collected three RBIs with a homer to left field. Raul Benavides kept things going, getting on base on an error. Cantu singled in the winning run for the 13-3 final. The Lobos close out their regular season with a weekend series on the road with Lubbock Christian College and a double header with Texas Tech University. LCC lost three of four games to New Mexico State University last weekend while Tech dropped two games to the University of Texas, Austin. Tech will have a Southwest Conference series Friday and Saturday before hosting the Lobos on Sunday. The district playoff pairings will be decided this weekend with the opening round games to be played May 13 at Hardin- Simmons University in Abilene.
