6 Congressional Districts Set Up For State by the LegislatureBill Signed As Governor Hails ActionCongressman - at*Large Seat Abolished; Session AdjournsBy STAFF REPORTER_ HARTFORD, April.23 —The Legislature today set up six congressional districts iu Connecticut, replacing the present five districts and a seat at-?arge. effective with the Nov. 3 election.Governor Signs Bill Governor Dempsey signed the bill into Jaw soon after the Assembly wound up its three day special session in mid-afternoon.The redistrict mg following the lines drafted in bi-partisan con-. ferences by Democratic and Republican leaders in advance of the session, marked the first re-shaping of state congressional districts since 1911.The .action was taken to bring the state into fine with a recent U. S. Supreme court decision requiring all congressional districts to be relatively equal in . population.The new districts vary in population from 482,135 in the Fourth which ' includes Bridgeport, to 404,2Of In the new Sixth district covering Litchfield county, If Hartford county towns, Sherman Brookfield and New Fairfield In Fairfield -county and Southbury and Middiebury in New Haven county.The action of the Assembly abolished the office of congress-s man-at-large which had been fill e ed on a statewide basis sinst 3931.Dempsey Hails Stepa Governor Dempsey, on signing t the bill, hailed the action, of tht e Assembly os history making.' if He said it will assure all tht r people of Connecticut a fair anc !, equal voice in the XI.
