Of this meeting Georgo B. Inues wan chairman, and J. \V. Moore, secretary. The principal busiuess douo was appointing Messrs. Albert Ball, F. A. Wullcy and Jacob L. Briggs a committee to confer with the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. This meeting was but— preliminary^ -The-rcgular organization did not hike place until October 3. which in consequence is the trnc birtli-duy ol' the Galveston Fire Department. Y'ord, was elected foreman.In July, 1952, tho Sons of Tcmperauce invited the nook and Ladders to join in a Fourth of July celebration, but they declined, probably because“Cold water waant qniti; to tbclr nitudn.Mr. Yard was again elected foremnu, and continued in office till the present tiiue.We next find them refusing in very tart terms, the invitation of Company No. 1, to. celebrate the 22d of February.In Jenuary, 1850, Chief Engineer Kirkland gavo notice that lie had a splendid firo trum-—pet for presentation-to the first -Company nt .fires during the year.Iu tin; minutes of February 5, 1857, wo find the f Bowing resolution—Resolved, That in appreciation of tho hospitality extended to us by Mrs. X'. D. Labndieat tho fires i.i this city, that this company present her with a silver cup, with a suitable inscription thereon Messrs. W. T. Austin, J. Dyer and Stephen Kirklaud were appoiutcd the committee. We find subsequent eutries in reference to this matter, bv which it appears that the cost was S.V2 50, and that the receipts of the testimonial*was acknowledged by Dr. Labadie for his wife. |The Hooker boys kept up their spasm of virtue,.and when, in '57, the Sunday Schools and Engine X*umber Ono wonted to have them celebrate the 4;k. they would not do it. Probably the committer on appetites -and fiuauces had spiled their disposition for feasting, ami, as a consequence, we find them, iu February, ‘58, investiug S20U iu city bonds. They, however, again refused an invitation to celebrate the 22d.During the war, the Hook uud Ladder Company, like everything else, was suspended. Ou Dec. 1$, ’GG, it was tho new aparots, which we described a few days since,' was rccciucd, and ir is now ready to do active service, being perfectly supplied with everything necessary for its duties.About this thiiue we find tho entry of Stephen Kirkluud s death. For tho proceedings ou this occasion, we matte the following ex tract : . .He had been connected with Hook and Ladder Company since its organization iu 1842.
