Silsbee senior Jordan Holmes rounded out the night by winning Best Swingman.Weisbrod, Holmes and three other finalists could not attend the event because of travel league tournaments in New Jersey and Las Vegas.Maybe the highlight of the evening was hearing former Houston Rocket and Ranger College coach Robert Reid give the keynote address. The highly entertaining Reid told story after story while hitting on key themes of personal responsibility and how important attitude is to being successful.“Why was I successful7'' Reid asked at one point in his speech. “God, family and a silly little thing called basketball. One thing 1 learned in my time with the Rockets is you have to go where there is no path and make your own trail.Reid also talked to the players in attendance about how he coaches his players at Ranger College.“I tell them when we go on road trips, there will be no headphones, Reid said. “I want them to walk like a Navy SEAL. I want them to scare the ticket taker. I want them to scare the opposing coach, because we showed up earlier for a road game than his own team did.”Other finalists for the award included Nederland senior guard Zach English, Silsbee senior center DaVaughn Thomas, Beaumont West Brook junior center Michael Zeno, West Orange-Stark junior guard LaQuarious Paige, West Brook senior swingman JJuan Hadnot and Port Arthur Memorial junior swingman TreVaughn Dennis.English was also a finalist last season and he reflected on being honored again among his peers.“It means a lot,” English said. “All the hard work pays off. It’s a great place to be. You get to have fun and enjoy each other. These kids are athletes and some studs on the basketball court. It’s great to be up there with them ”
