By SCOTT MORGAN Courier Sports Editor Tomorrow, April 24, Les Davis will take his 1979 Bauxite track team to Cove in quest of sixth straight district e. The meet basically comes down to Bauxite vs. Mountain Pine. But to head coach Davis you can pinpoint the com petition even closer. “What it basically comes down to is Mountain Pine’s sprinters and jumpers ver sus our distance runners, was comets by spelling events to Mountain Pine because they have the top sprinters this year. They have always been good in the sprints. But then we are just as good in the field events.” The field events appear to be the backbone for the 1979 Bauxite team just like in the past. The Miners this season return three shot putters who placed one, two, three in the 1978 dis trict meet, along with an other shot putter which gives the Miners even more depth this year. Along with them the Min ers will have the returning district now in the discus and bi ig ,which Davis Davis hoping will play up in the meet, is the create depth that the Miners have this season. “Our depth is a big lie in the meet,”’ Davis said. “Last year only the junior and senior high boys were in the finals on Thursday but this year we are also oest te Se Neon the senior high girls. This will be SF One more time a rest between events which is on edge to Moun tain Pine. We have some youngoung men who are going double and triple for us, so it will also give our guys a nice bit more time ta king hope fully going to bring Bauxite High School their sixth straight district team title. A title which has been in the minds of the Bauxite tracksters for some time now “In February, our goal was set for the district championship,” Davis said. “We're going into the meet with an air of confidence and enthusiasm. What we know is this. We started in February with the district as our goal and we want to have our best perform ances of the year next Tuesday and tursday. When we do that, eve on will take care of ! “Davis is in his second car as head coach of the rack team but has worked with the squad for several seasons. According to Davis this is one of the best “We've talked about it on several occasions. Coach James and I truly believe that this is the best overall track team, Bauxite has ever had. That’s talking about the overall team. We have more on this squad overall than any team in the ! While it appears as if Coutain Pine and Bauxite are the cream of the crop in the district this season, Davis knows that other must be watched. “There's a lot of schools which will play a big part in the meet. Arkansas School for the Deaf and Cove will play the spoilers roll. They can knock you out of a point here or there or can also help you out,” Davis said. ‘‘We haven’t seen ASD run yet this year. I don’t plan gl oe though gable a ton champ louie. ‘Mag champ! . Mag net Cove is improving but it still seems to be quite a 14 Bpaten to them and us truthful about it.” Davis talked about his depth and the meet itself in each event. 100-yard dash Best Time: Keith Brown 10.8 tach a to plate sustain. face = Hall px Keith Brown our two top ts. ifim or Keith trane abe to fourth and the eth it would please of 220-yard dash Best Time: Keith Brown 24.2 “In the 220 we'll have Greg Grant, Keith Brown and Danny Tarver. Two Mile Best Time: Todd Lewis 11:18 “Todd Lewis finished l y Johnson second on Tuesday against Mountain Pine. We need a first though in the districts in the two mile. This is what he wants.
