Following an address by Max Bentley, editor of the Reporter and News of Apdilene, at the Lions club on Wednesday noon at the Hotel Ansford, a committee was appointed by the president to function with like committees from Hamlin and Abilene Chambers of Commerce in opposing the application of the T P Railway company and the Abilene and Southern railways to abandon railway service between Abilene and Anson and service and trackage between this city and Ham lin. The committee is composed of Omar Burleson, county judge, who has been working on the matter, with Knox Pittard, W. S. Pope, Jr., Joe Boyd, and Mell S. Barkley. The application is to be heard at Abilene May 1 before the Inter state Commerce Commission. Bentley stated that the service and road should be maintained for three reasons. Anson and Hamlin have a vested right in the property. When the Abilene and Southern was built, the towns of Anson and Hamlin sac rificed in raising bonuses to secure the railroad, Anson making up about $40,000 and Hamlin about $60,000, about two-thirds of the cost of the road. This constitutes an in vestment on the part of Anson and Hamlin, whose rights should not be ignored. Recently the T. P. Railway made application before the Texas Railroad Commission asking for a permit to operate tracks and buses between Abilene, Anson, and Ham lin, promising that this added ser vice would not interfere with the present operation of the railroad. The West Texas Chamber of Com merce has intervened in favor of the three towns, and has offered the Services of its traffic Manager, E. R. Tanner of El Paso, to assist them. If the application should be grant ed, it would follow, Bentley stated, that the road from Abilene to Bal linger would be discontinued, and eventually the Wichita Valley would be lost both to Abilene and Anson, leaving the former city with one road and Anson with none. Evangelist H. W. Busby, who is conducting a revival at the Anson Church of Christ, addressed the club paying tribute to the kind of work Lions usually sponsor. Cecil E. Hill, pastor of the church, a guest also, led in singing, Jimmie Tucker of Big Spring was present to make up his attendance record. D. A. Bandeen of Stamford was also present, his talk being reported elsewhere in this paper. Omar Burleson was made chair man of the Centennial program committee, with J. H. Warren and Otto Sosebee as members. The club is meaning to go in large numbers to the 2-T meeting at Childress May 3, 4 and 5, in an effort to win a $1000 prize.
