Mecklenburg Hotel BurnedTlie Mecklenburg Iiotel, Cbase City, Ya., famnuN as an all-tbe-year-round health and pleasure resort, was destroyed by fire last Friday afternoon. Fortunately there were only about .‘10 guests there at the time and 'he fire occurred in the day or the consequences might have leen more disastrous. The flames were discovered by guests on the lawn, who saw smoke issuing from the slate roof, and the alarm was given immediately, but the fire-fighting facilities were wholly inadequate to cope with the fire raging fiercely. All the guests esca|ed and the most of them saved all their personal belongings before the fire reached the lower floors of the structure, but much of the furniture in the upper rooms was thrown from windows and destroyed or battered.The Mecklenburg, which was a I»eautiful hotel situated on a commanding elevation with broad sloping grounds, was an expansive frame structure, built 10 years ago by the Mecklenburg Springs Company at acost including furnishings. $20*0,000. It had 200 guest chambers all well furnished. At the time of the fire, it whs owned bv the estate of M. I.. T. Davis. of Norfolk, and other*, and was leased and operated by The Mecklenburg Mineral Spring* Company, W. T. Hughes, president, who had conducted it for several years. The owners carried only $75,000 insurance on hotel and equipment.It is to be hoped that the hotel willbe rebuilt. It is too valuable a property to remain unutilized.
