The Sul Ross State University Lobos kept their first-place lead in the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association as they split a double twin-bill with Tarleton State University at Kobernot Field over the weekend. The Lobos got off to a slow start Friday as the Texans pounded Sul Ross pitcher Mike Gonzales for 11 hits including six doubles and a pair of home runs to take an 8-3 win. The Texans scored in every in ning except the fifth and the seventh, while the Lobos could only manage single tallies in the first, third and fourth. Lobo hurler Jeff Price held the Texans to three runs on five hits in the second game, and Sul Ross picked up a 6-3 win. The score was tied 3-3 after four, but the Lobos scored three times in the fifth for the win ning margin. Manuel Alvarado led of the fifth with a double. After walks to John Bowman and Rio Acos ta, Burril Daly hit into a double play that should have ended the inning. But a bad Texan throw to first allowed two runs to score and kept the inning alive. After Nacho Vela stole second, Brent Harris lined a single to drive in the final run. Price shut down the Texans to pick up his seventh win of the year. Saturday’s opening contest was another Lobo pitching demonstration that featured the throwing of Johnny Guer rero. Tarleton was able to pick up only one hit off Guerrero, and that was an infield single late in the contest. The Lobos started off quick on offense, scoring six runs in the first inning with defensive er rors by the Texans contributing to the total. Darrell Holmes and Opie Par sons led off with singles. John Bowman then drove a grounder between third and short to bring in the first run. After a walk and a Texan error allowed two more runs, Daly and Jeff Parnell singled in one run each to give the Lobos a 5-0 lead. Brent Harris drove in the final run of the inning with a grounder. In the fourth, with two on, Manuel Alvarado drilled a home run to bring the final three runs as the Lobos took the game 9-0. Guerrero kept the Texas off balance all day with the finest performance of his collegiate career. He faced the minimum of 21 batters to earn his six win of the year. By the fourth game of the series, both teams were flat. Tarleton took the lead with two runs in the first, but they saw the Lobos tie the game in the third on two errors and a hit. After Tarleton took a 4-2 lead in the fourth, the Lobos tied the game again on a walk and a homer by Harris. It took the Texans nine innings to put the game away for the 10- 7 win. The series gave Sul Ross a 5-3 edge over Tarleton in the TIAA race. All Sul Ross needs to do this weekend is beat Austin Col lege. The Lobos embarrassed AC in Sherman earlier in the season by taking the four-game conference series by a combined total score of 60-3. Game time Friday is 3 p.m., and Saturday’s double header begins at noon. The Lobos will close out regular-season play at Kokernot Field April 29-30 with a series against Lubbock Sul Ross will host the Nation al Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ District 8 playoffs at Kokernot Field May 4-7.
