A long-distance telephone call at 8:40 a.m. today ended a long-time worry of Dr. J.A. Wiles, Monongalia County health director. Dr. Wiles’ son, John W. Wiles, until recently stationed in Saigon, South Viet nam, with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), called to tell his father he and his family had been evacuated safely to Bangkok, Thailand. As the military situation rapidly disintegrated around Saigon, Dr. Wiles and his wife felt their worry grow about the safety of their son and his family, Ba Lan, his Vietnamese wife, and John, Jr., his son, age six. John Wiles, 32, has been in Vietnam for eight years, initially with the Army and later with USAID. He is a 1965 graduate in biology and pre-medicine from West Virginia University. There had been no mail flowing from South Vietnam and, Dr. Wiles said, ‘It’s good news for us to know he’s safe and sound.” Wiles is ‘‘moving in this direction’’ and will be in Morgantown within two or three weeks to begin a visit with his parents. In Vietnam, Wiles was involved with the flow of medical supplies and development of clinics in the war-torn country.
