upstagegives some show biz~nback to New Haven |BroadwayBy GLORIA COLEHey gang, there’s big-deal doings in New Haven. After years of New Haven sending entertainment to Broadway, Broadway has finally sent something back. It's a slick, chic, urban ambiance cabaret-restau-rant with genuine New York entertainment. At least that’s the promise launched by the opening last weekend of Sherman’s Tav-eme by the Green and its first show, which features a femalevocal trio called “Formerly The Harlettes.”The explanation of the name of this lively, talented and smoothly professional group is that as The Harlettes they were backup singers for such as Bette Midler, Lanie Kazan and Petula Clark, among others, and now they have taken off on their own. They should do well. They’ve got the voices, the style and some delightful material, most notably Irving Berlin’s “I’ll Be Loving You Always’’ as Stevie Wonder would sing it and a gospel version of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union theme song. Of the two black girls, Sharon is the petite — almost elfin — one, while Charlotte is the big, earthy type and the white girl, Ulla, is a kind of Bette Midler with hollow cheekbones. The new cabaret is as sleek as the show. Located at 1032 Chapel St., it has been extravagantly restored to its former elegance as the Union League Club with dark-panelled walls, high molded ceilings, a crystal chandelier said to come from the P.T. Barnum mansion, lush rugs. Queen Anne chairs and such table appointments as long-stemmed goblets. The cabaret stands on the former site of the home of Roger Sherman, the first Mayor of New Haven and the restaurant’s namesake, commemorated in a plaque over the massive carved fireplace which reads: “Upon thesite of this building stood the ^ home of Roger Sherman, General ^ George Washington claimed his lt;/ friendship and counsel and was ^ his guest here in 1789.” lt;The menu will feature conti- q. nental gourmet food, served from ^ 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. A special late-night menu will also be available 2 (a boon to early closing New lt;Haven) with food served until ^ shortly before closing.
