In the finals In1 they were defeated by Scott ^Reed Hatch and Reid Cox, a Junior-sophomore duo on the MHS tennis team, received runner-up awards at the Snow College Invitational last Friday. The right and left handed doubles combo are hoping that they can move up one notch In standings at the upcoming BYU Invitational.For five consecutive years MHS has won the BYU doubles event. Going back to 1967,the pair of Richard Nelson and Ted Christensen were victorious. Then In 1968 it was LaMar Barton and Terry Keller. In 1969 Barton Joined forces with Eddie Gray to win. In 1970 and also 1971 Brian Hatch and Mark Aston kept the string going with back-to-back performances. These young athletes will be working hard the next two weeks to sharpen their games and hope to pull an upset.In gaining the finals at Snow College Hatch and Cox defeated three good teams. First It was a 7-5, 7-5 win over Lee Esplln and Gary Nelson, who hail from the land where “the summer sun stays all winter*' — Dixie.Second round they beat Ron Madsen and Dave Edwards of Wasatch of Heber 6-4, 6-3. Third round the win was from Juab's Dan Warner and RexWilliams and Scott Goelberg of Grantsville 6—2, 6—2. q^Bruce Monson, a senior who ag is relatively new to the game, ov lost in the second round to steady Stan Carr of Intermountain (Brigham City) 6-0, 6-4. J He played a strong second half I after adjusting to the slices and cuts of the consistent Carr.Other members of this year’s | young team who are practicing | every night are Charles Cox, Mike Jensen, Hal Stott, Randy Nielsen, Steven Jensen, Randy Steck, Max Anderson. Ron Kei-sel, and Lance Mickelsen. Thisyear’s squad is relatively Inexperienced but are improvingrapidly.Some of the MHS graduates playing college tennis Include a Leland Thompson, who is seeIng I plenty of action at Utah State I and Is currently undefeated In I play. Brian Hatch, Jim Bralth- I walte, Mark and Scott Aston, 9 and Joe Green are all mem- B bers of the Snow College tennis team. Snow is hoping to repeat as ICAC champs.John Hall is also coaching the Utah State Aggies to a successful season. He assisted last year and took over this season while pursuing a Master’s degree in business. tr
