Beauvoir, April 12,—The old say ing that a good looking woman can make a preacher lay his Bible down may or may not be true, but that a good jazz saxophone band can make Confederate veterans lay their crutches down was demonstrated at a wonderful dance given at the Jefferson Davis Soldiers’ Home in itating the new $5,000 dining room just completed by Superintendent El nathan Tartt. The new dining room is very spa cial, 100 feet long and 36 feet. Wide, illminated brilliantly with electric lights. It is estimated that more than 1,000 people attended the dative, but not all these were danc ing people as hundreds of visitors came just to see the aged veterans, their wives and widows, dance the Virginia reel, the old time squt dances and cotillions. Men and wa ter 800s of age and more danc ed and danced and danced. When the old folks got tagged out, Superintendent Tartt turned the hall over to the young folks who wanted to dance all the latest dances and as the seventy-five couples waltzed, one- Stepped and trotted to the tunes of “The Land Where the Sweet Dad dies Grow, “The West ‘Texas Blues,” and “A Woman Gets Tired of Oss Man All The Time,” the scene be came more animated, with such mu sic as furnished by the Bookers Jazz Band it seemed that no one could keep his feet still. Superintendent Tartt had an ex pert chiropodist spend a week at the home prior to the dance so coins and oinions would not interfere with the old folks’ dancing. He also had them to rehearse the afternoons be fore the dance, “Shake It and Break It” proved the most popular dance music with the veterans.
