Fair approves purses Solano County Fair di rectors have approved $543,488 in purses for horsemen during the 1978 season that will run from June 12-24 The total breaks down into $458,029 for thor oughbred owners, $58,731 to quarter-horse stables, and $26,728 to Appaloosa competitors under a dis tribution recommended by Ronald D. Miller, Fair secretary-manager and di rector of racing. The directors also voted to extend the present con tract with Foley Burk Shows to operate the fair's carnival through 1981. A $38,815 bid by the Able Fence Co. of Petaluma to construct a new inner rail around the seven-eighths of a mile race track was denied. The bid was higher than the $26,000 allocated by the State Fairs and Ex positions Division. Miller was authorized to seek approval of the Board of Supervisors to purchase materials and install the rail with Fairstaff Miller assured directors that the Sports Arena, whose capacity is being doubled to 3,000 seats, will be ready for the June 12 opening.
