Two girls from Harrison and Widefield high schools will rep resent the Pikes Peak Region in the National Speech Tourna ment at the Air Force Academy June 14-18. Nancy Rose of Harrison, coached by Michael Midgley, and Debbie Outlaw of Widefield, coached by Joseph Dionisio, tal lied their final points toward the nationals at the qualifying tournament held last week in Littleton. Thirty-five National Forensic League chapters attended the meet. Both girls have competed in up to eight other tourna ments this year. Both girls are seniors and for Debbie, this was her first year of competition. Nancy has four years’ experience. In the final round of the ex temporaneous speaking in Lit tleton, Nancy selected the topic “Should There Be Greater Cen sorship of Violence on Tele vision.” It was, She said, ‘‘the easiest” of the three topics she had to choose from. Contestants in extemporan eous speaking draw the topics and are given 30 minutes to chose one and prepare a speech. Nancy said that she enjoys the challenge of the task and win ning was “a three-year dream come true.” She competed in debate com petition for the last three years and the same aspects of prepa ration and deliverance in both events helped her in this win, she said. Debbie received the top award in dramatic inter pretation for her presentation of a scene from ‘“‘David and Lisa’”’ by Dr. Theodore Rubin. She said that her coach helped her select the piece, then they worked on it several times a week over the past several months.
