Occupational therapy, designed to speed up recovery and adjust ment for disabled persons, now is available at Freeman hospital here. The additional therapeutic serv ice, under direction of Miss Mar ilyn Blanke, was introduced by the hospital as part of its expansion program early this month. Such therapy is being offered for both hospitalized patients and out patients. It includes craft work, training in activities of daily liv ing and functional spliting, all of which are applied for the psycho logical and physical betterment of the patient. “The Joplin hospital also offers physical therapy for these pa tients. Directed by Charles Chirley, this department uses light, heat, cold, water, electricity, message and exercise to aid in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Physical therapy was instituted by the hos pital about eight months ago. Written orders from a staff phy sician are necessary for a pa tient to receive either type of therapy treatment. Miss Blanke said Friday a clinic for cerebral palsied children, spon sored by the Tri-County Cerebral Palsy Association, will be con ducted at the hospital May 18. Dr. R. E. Brunner of Kansas City will supervise the clinic. Both thera pists of Freeman hospital will as sist the clinic, and will be avail able for interim treatments, if in dicated. Hospital officials report that there is a great need for equip ment and materials of various types for both of the therapy de partments. They said any dona tion of labor, funds or equipment would be appreciated greatly.
