“Y” Captain Negotiates Low Hurdles in 23.5, With McBeth Close Behind; Cougars Annex Relay Paced by Captain Dale Schofield, the smooth running “iron man’ athlete whose form is so smooth he seems only half trying, the Brigham Young university track and field team won the first dual meet of the season on the sta dium field Saturday afternoon, de feating University of Utah 78 to 62. Schofield won four first places, taking the 100 yard dash, the 120 yard high hurdles, and the 220 yard dash in stride, then went on to establish a new state record in the 220 yard low hurdles in his final race. The old low hurdles record was held jointly by Pete Wilson, ‘Y, and Murdock, ‘U, at 123.6 seconds. The new mark also ties his own Rocky Mountain con ference record, which he shares with Allot, Colorado U. Third in Broad Jump— In the broad jump, which Scho field started only this week, he gained a tie for third place with Glade Anderson, a team-mate, at 21 feet. Newell Rushforth, Utah, won the event with a leap of 22 feet 2 inches, a distance Schofield surpassed on his second trial last Tuesday when he sailed out 22 feet 1134 inches. The broad jumpers only counted the qualifying heat s because of a brisk wind that came up when the finals were starting. George Gourley vaulted 13 feet 1 inch, which is 178 inches short of his state and conference record, but, failed to better the mark on a try at 13 feet 4 inches. The mile race was won by the veteran Ernest Barlow of Utah after Lawrence Golding, slim Cou gar distance man, had raced him for 150 yards in a neck and neck finish that started at the far turn. Coach Ott Romney gave the Utes a mild surprise with his new quarter miler, Lee Brooks, who led all the way until the final stretch, when Aldo Nichols bested him by two feet in a thrilling finish. Crane was but av yard behind Brooks. Schofield won handily in the century, beating Howard Bellows, former Payson athlete to the tape by two yards. He also was com fortably ahead in the high hurdles with Maxfield and Rush forth of Utah and McBeth, “¥ bunched in second, third and fourth places. Metihell Taylor took the half mile with six yards to spare, with Albert Barlow second, Albert is a brother of Ernest, the brothers being known as Dizzy and Daffy to their mates. . The elder Barlow, Ernest, won the two-mile race after fighting off the challenge of Max Andrews, ‘Y' runner, who attempted to pass the Utahn on the next to last tur then battled him down the stretch, finishing two yards in the rear. Dean of the ‘Y' was 30 yards be hind. A striking feature of the dis cus event was the superb ferm displayed by Hugh Cannon, ace Cougar weightman, who made several excellent throws, the best one 155.8 feet, without a waste moliin in any of them. Van McBeth showed remark able promise in the 220-yard low hurdles, in which he finished but 2 yard behind the record-setting Schofield. The mile relay was a thriller. After the first three men had Tun Broncks of the ‘Y’ was handed a six-yard advantage, but Nichols pulled up on the fleet Cougar and finished a scant yard behind.
