Miss Florence Johnson, a senior in Mitchell high school, was awarded first place in the annual declamatory contest held Friday evening in the high school auditorium, while Lawrence Durkee was given first place in the oratorioal contest. The selection given by Miss Johnson was ‘Her Country,”” by Mary Shipman Andrews, while Lawrence Durkee’s oration was “The Knight Among Na tions.” Miss Marguerite Farrer, with a reading, “The Lance of Kamana,” re ceived second place in the declamatory contest, while Malcolm Ronald, with the oration, “Funeral Oration at Burial of John Brown,” received second place in the oratorical contest. The winners Thursday evening will repre sent Mitchell high school in the dis trict contest to be held at Kimball on April 25. The other contestants in declama tion included the following. Ruth Craton, “The Lost Word.” Florence Gillis, “The Highwayman.” Cleota Branch, “In the Palace of the King.” Hilda Rosenquist, “The End of the Task.” Ruth Staples, “The Red Cross Flag.” The additional contestants in ora tion were: Ruth Craton, “Our Responsibilities as a Nation.” Lyle Kinpert, “Lincoln's Second In augural Address.” Robert Stedman, “The flag Day Address.” Charles Scarlett, “What Democracy Means. Roy Baum, “Abraham Linecoin.”
