lt;,uitc a celebrity in the world of deformities has passed away in the “elephant man,” who was found dead in his bed at the London hospital the other day. This unfortunate creature was afflicted by a species of elephantiasis, with the result that he had a head like an elephant, and one of his arms was similarly deformed. He was at one time exhibited round the country in a show, but his appearance was so terrifying, especially to nervous women and children, that the exhibition was stopped by the police. Subsequently, he was taken over to Belgium and was shewn there, but on parting with the show-own ers he was robbed of his money and left entirely destitute. He managed in some way or other to get back to London, where he was found in the streets followed by a large crowd on account of his singular appearance.
