Mullen served as publisher of The Lima News from 1991 to 2000 A former publisher of The Lima News, now president and publisher of other Freedom Communications properties, will retire later this year. Thomas J. Mullen, president and publisher of The Gazette and Freedom Colorado Infor mation Inc. in Colorado Springs, is a Lima native who began working for The Lima News as an entry-level re- Mullen porter in 1958. “With my 65th birthday coming up in early October, I decided to announce my pend ing retirement now,” Mullen said. “Freedom Communica tions will have plenty of time to select a successor and assure an effective leadership transi tion for its important Colorado Springs operations.” Mullen’s official retirement date will be Nov. 1, although he will leave somewhat earlier than that depending on when the transition to his replace ment is completed. N. Christian Anderson, Free dom’s Metro Information Di vision president, said he will conduct a national search for the new Gazette and Freedom Colorado president and pub lisher. “Tom Mullen has spent more than two-thirds of his life with Freedom and it is hard to imag ine the company without his presence,” Anderson said. “He has led Freedom Colorado through important and signif icant change in the past four years. We are very grateful for his many, many contributions to Freedom. Freedom will con duct an extensive internal and external search for Mullen’s replacement. “Having spent time as pres ident and publisher of The Gazette, I know the commu nity well,” Anderson said. “We will find a strong re placement for Tom, someone who will continue our efforts to serve Colorado Springs and Southern Colorado with in dispensable information and community leadership.” Mullen will be completing 46 years with Freedom Com munications when he retires next fall. He has headed Freedom’s Colorado Springs businesses since May 2000. Freedom Col orado Information includes The Gazette, gazette.com, col oradosprings.com, commer cial printing, a direct mail ser vice and several niche publica tions. Mullen was publisher from 1991 to 2000 at The Lima News. In 1999-2000, he also was a vice president of Free dom’s Community Newspa pers Division with oversight re sponsibility for six Central Group daily newspapers in five states. From 1981 to 1991, Mullen was the editor of what was then The Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph. From 1964 to 1981, he served as the editor of The Lima News. Mullen and his wife, Vicky, have been married 42 years. After retirement, they expect to remain in Colorado. The Mul lens have five grandchildren. Their two married daughters live in Denver and Dallas. Mullen is the immediate past chair of the board of di rectors for the Greater Col orado Springs Economic De velopment Corporation and continues to serve with that board and also with the board of directors of the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation. The Metro Information Di vision includes Freedom’s three largest newspapers and related information busi nesses in Orange County, the East Valley (Mesa and Scotts dale) in Phoenix and Colorado Springs.
