On Thursday of last w.eek the trialof Warren Ewing, of Canfield, came off in the Court of Common Pleas of Holmes county, on the charge of poisoning Miss Dunn, of Paint township, and after an impartial hearing of the case, the jury brought in a verdict of acquittal. Annie Brant, the girl who lived with Mary J. Dunn, was one of the principal witnesses against Ewing. Her evidence indicated a “ nigger in the wood-pile,” as she was a would-be heir to the Dunn property in case of Mary’s death. Quite a number of our citizens attended the trial, and report says Ewing will make some of the principal instigators “ Rqueal” before he is done with them. The jury were out but a short time and brought in a verdict of not guilty. With the train of circumstantial evidence “ trumped up” against him and the strong prejudice brought to bear upon the case, it appeared at first almost an impossibility to unravel the mystery. Through the almost superhuman efforts of H. A. Manchester, Esq., of this place, the well-woven chain of evidence was rent asunder and the prisoner honorably acquitted and discharged. The motive on the part of the instigators was made apparent, and they should be punished to the full extent of the law, and probably will be. Mr. Ewing is at home here and his friends congratulate him upon his release from a band—worse than robbers and thieves.
