Bernadette Romero, 17-year-old senior at Gallup High School, is the winner of the $500 Scholar ship Award offered annually by Gallup Lodge 1440 of The Bene volent and Protective Order of Elks. Recipients of $250 Scholarship Awards were Jess Sandoval, who placed second in the judging, and John McBride. Both are also sen iors at Gallup High School Alternates named were Catherine Mary Gruda of Gallup High and Clifford Mahooty of Zuni High School. Miss Romero is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Romero of Hillcrest Trailer Court in Gallup Bernadette has five brothers and three sisters with six of them at tending local schools besides her self. Her father is case supervior for the Department of Public Wel fare for McKinley County Bernadette has been active in many organizations during her high school years. She presently is president of the local chapter of Future Teachers of America, a member of the National Honor Society the past two years, is al ternate to Girls’ State as a junior, representative on the student coun cil for her four high school years as well as memberships in several other school and church organiza tions. She plans to attend the Uni versity of New Mexico as a sec ondary education major with sci ence or psychology teaching as her ultimate goal The second-place winner is the 19-year-old son of Mr.and Mrs Bernabe Sandoval, employe of the La Fonda Cafe He lives with a sister, Mrs. Manuel Dall ago, 1502 W. Gold St. and is one of 12 children Jess is president of the student council at Gallup Hich and was president of his junior class as well as being active in many school and church activities He plans to attend Southeastern Ok lahoma University, majoring in education with foreen languages his chosen field John McBride is the son of Mr and Mrs. Nelson McBride, mis sionaries near Thoreau where they operate the Crossroads Mission. John is the oldest of eight chil dren. He is a member of the Gal lup High School Marching Band from which he was selected as a member of the All-State Clinic Band this year. The fact that he lives beyond Thoreau has prevent ed his taking part in many high school activities Jean plans to attend Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill, with a ma jor in music education and wants to become a teacher of music. The scholarship awards are giv en annually by the Elks to de serving students of area high schools with the need for financial assistance as well as scholastic accomplishments of the student be ing considered. Twelve schools were given the opportunity to have seniors apply for this years a wards with 16 students from three schools making application The senior must be in the top 2§ per cent of his class Joe Di Gregorio was chairman of this year’s scholarship.commit tee and committee members were Don Stokes and Orville Adams, both area school officials The scholarship fund was first set up to award one prize of $1,000 but as the applications increased it was later changed to one of $750 and $250 and still later to the present $500-$250-$250 division.
