40 YEARS AT PENNA member of the School of Agriculture faculty at the Pennsylvania State College since 1901, Professor Thomas I. Mairs, director of cores-pondence courses in agriculture, retired on April 1.A native of Missouri, Professor Mairs was graduated from the University of Missouri in 1896 and four years later received a master of science degree from the same institution. He served as superintendent of field experiments at the University of Illinois and as superintendent of the farm at the University of Missouri before going to Penn State.As a member of the faculty at the Pennsylvania State College, Professor Mairs was successively assistant in correspondence courses, assistant professor of animal husbandry, associate professor in the same department, and pprofessorof agricultural education, before be-ing placed in charge of correspondence courses.Under his supervision, alfalfa was first grown successfully on the College farms, in 1903. He served as farmers* institute lecturer and was an instructor in agriculture at the summer sessions of thePennsylvania Chautauqua at Mt.Gretna for a number of years.Professor Mairs is author of the book, “Some Pennsylvania Pioneers in Agricultural Science,” consisting of biographies of early staff members of the College.* .Upon his retirement at the age of 70, Professor Mairs was presented with an honorary scroll inscribed with a record of his achievements and bearing the signatures of the President of the College, the Dean of the School of Agriculture, and faculty colleagues.GRAPES FROM ERIE■Erie County is far in the lead among the counties in grape production, contributing mostly to holding this State in fourth pom-flftflmtJto**m t» grape
