John T. Gregory, one of the oldest residents of Harrison township, died Thursday at 12:30 at the home of his son, Charles Gregory, on Washington avenue this city. Mr. Gregory was born in Harrison town ship and lived there for seventy four years. He had been in bad health for more than two years caused by a stroke of paralysis two winters ago. Since that time he had been rapidly declining but had been confined to his bed but five months. His death was due to a complication of diseases that set in after the stroke of paraly sis. While his death was not unex pected it was not thought that he was any worse Wednesday than he had been, and it was a shock to his friends when his death was report ed. Mr. Gregory had never lived out of Harrison township more than eight months, and that was spent with his son here. He was born in Harrison township four years old at the time of his death. At fifteen he was left an or phan and was adopted by George Houts of Veale township, and under him learned the tanners’ trade in the days when orphans were given to men to work for them-a certain length of time for board and keep, as it was called. As soon as the great improvement was made in the tanning world Mr. Gregory left this work and went to farming. He was married to Mary Ellen Jones, daugh ter of Jacob Jones, July 26, 1854. Three children are living, Nelson and Charles Gregory of this city, and Mrs. E. T. Clark of Vincennes. When he was twenty-one years old Mr. Gregory joined the Methodist church at Ebenezer and he had been a faith ful member of this church for more than half a century. His wife died about two years ago and for about eight months he had been making his home in this city. He was never a member of any secret order.
