On account of enten-uatliig circumstances in their cases, these young men wore punished in some other way than by dismissal.At the regular morning drill the names of tlio participants were called and they dropped out as they heard their names called. After all the property had been turned In to the quartermaster the boys as directed by Commandant Minus, assembled in Hie chapel.After all the cadets of tlio Institution wore seated and after tlio regular chapel services were concluded President Mell arosu and in a few words announced that lie was extremely sorry that the escapade had occurred, lie was very sorry, he said, that the guilty boys would have to bn dealt willi severely, but discipline was absolutely necessary and Hie college authorities must lie obeyed by the cadets.After President Moll had concluded Commandant Minus addressed the cadets along the same lines • Dr. Moll. This order provided for tho dismissal from the college of 43 members of the preparatory class, 13 2 members of the freshman class and S2 members of tlio soplimore class. The laws of Clomson college prohibit expulsion. Dismissal means that the connection with Clenison college of the 2 a 7 cadets dismissed is pcrmautly absolved. These cadets may eaterother colleges in or on! of South Carolina.The members of the discipline committee have just gone through the hardest experience they have over had. They have been patient and have beard every cadet under the serious charge. We do not. believe that any one knowingly mule an incorrecl slateiiient; but we do know IInil some of the newspaper reports were written by men who knew but littb' about the facts which tliev attempted to stale. The newspaper articles referred to above stated that several orders and warnings were published at retreat on the evening of March :11st. As a mailer of fact, only one order was published, and that called attention to paragraph I2i of the Regulations for the Government of Co dels, The order in question was as follows:Headquarters Corps of Cadets Cloiusou Agricultural CoP.egoClomson College, S. C., “March 31, tfiuS. General Orders No. 4 2.Par. I The attention of the corps of cadets is especially directed to paragraph tail of ’Tlio Regulations for the Government of Cadets,' which reads as follows:'Any cadet who leaves hariacks without authority at any time between retreat and reveille, shall be dismissed.'Hy order of Capl. Minus.As far as we have been able to find out, no one left barracks without authority during that time. The newspaper reports made it seem that this order was intended for the next day, when the order Itself plainly shows that li was not.2. A statement was made that telegrams were sent to Prof. 11. II. Flke Informing him that bis isGy'cos wore no longer needed. It. II. \Fike Is a cadet and not a professor! anil the telegram was sent tn a spirit of fun, merely to lot Flke know that the participants wore carrying oil their April Fool celebration. Cadet Hike was ill no way connected with the affair.;;.
