KENTUCKY PARTYWell Pleased With Their Visit to Mexico.Mr. Atherton, of Louisville. Talks on Topics of the Hour.Mr. .1. M. Atherton, a retired merchant of Louisville, Kentucky, who has been visiting in the city for some time, expects to leave this morning by tne Central ior AciuiFcaliontes. ws rpute to California, accompanied by Mrs. Thomas Floyd-Smith, Mrs. C. IV. Pepauw. Miss Barbour Bruce and Miss Catherine Caldwell, also of Louisville, who have been traveling with Mr. Atherton. Before arriving in Mexico, the party had visited Nassau, Santiago de Cuba, Cienfucgos, Matanzas, Havana and Pinar del Bio.Mr. Atherton was asked last night by a reporter as to his impressions of the prevailing sentiment isi Cuba and ■whether the jeop!e are taking kindly to the American regime.Mr. Atherton replied :“My observations of Cuba were necessarily superficial owing to the briefness of my stay there. As far as I could judge, the sentiment «i the substantial class— the people who have business interests— tends in the direction of annexation to the United States as affording the quickest road to those stable conditions that are essential to commercial prosperity. The sentiment among the masses is no doubt in favor of a separateand independent government, a sentiment which is fomented by local political leaders. J think that an effort will be made to establish some form *f independent government and my prediction is that it will not succeed, and that, as a consequence. Cuba will be annexed to the United States with the consent of her people.“As for your country, continued Mr. Atherton, “it :s a glorious one: your scenery is magnificent and your ciimate splendid. The entire valley «»f Mexico seems to me to be exceedingly fertile. I have been most agreeably surprised at the resources of Mexico. I have never seen a more beautiful spot than Cuernavaca and that is the opinion, too, of all the ladies of the party. We have also visited Puebla. Orizaba and Veracruz.“We have had a very pleasant visit in this city and have been most kindly and courteously treated by Ambassador Clayton, with whose family we were previously acquainted. The Misses Clayton have wsited Louisville and have many friends and are much admired there. The social attentions which we have received from General Ulavton and his family have been one of the most pleasant features of our trip.”When questioned about the political trouble in Kentucky, Mr. Atherton said:“It has now passed its acute stage and by the «*nr.«ent of both parties is in the hands oi the courts for settlement, so that fortunately the danger of bloodshed has entirely passed away.”“What is the sentiment in your section of the country” asked th.tr reporter, “in regard to the war in South Africa?”“The German population on account of affinity sympathize with the Boers and there are also some Americans who entertain the same views. On the other band there are many of our people who recognise the kindly Servicedone for us* by England in our warwith Spain and who, without feel in a called on to inquire very closely into the details of the dispute, sympathize with England on the principle of reciprocity and endorse the course of the administration. In my opinion, that will be the. ultimate judgment on the matter of the majority of the American people.”Mr. Atherton and party are traveling in the private car no. 353 oi theLouisville ana Nashville railroad. They expect to be back in Louisville about the middle of Mav.
