The enemy were pressing upon the artillerymen whose supporting infantry were thus in flight. Thus in the first Hnc-of-batilo Sherman’a lino consisted of the 1st Ohioon.tho right, supporting Schwartz’s Bat* ierv, tbe 23d Illinois, supporting Taylor's Bat-terV, and the 77th aod had Obio supporting Waterhouse. The Ohio regiments broke and run, leaving Schwartz and Waterhouse entirely unsupported, and Taylor's only by the 23d Illinois, Col. Riordor.. Tbe latter regiment fonglit like heroes. Their gallant Lieutenant Colonel Ellis, formerly ft bunker in Rockford, was.killed. Notwithstanding they ■were thus deserted, Waterhouse and Schwartz fought their batteries nearly twenty minutes, the lor-mor losing one. the latter nil his gun*,'and Taylor and tbe 23d only retiring -when flanked on both sides, when tbe gallant fellows drew back through a cross tire, disputing every inch. _We may state here that this battery did not go into bnltlooa the following day.
