By Dan Balaban Staff Writer The Dallas-Fort Worth Inter national Airport filed suit Thurs day in state district court in Dallas seeking to strike down zoning ordinances adopted by Grapevine and two other airport area cities that airport officials claim ‘“‘have had a chilling ef fect” on the airport’s $3.5 billion expansion plan. Calling the ordinances an “‘ill advised legal ploy” to delay pre development and expan sion at DFW, Airport Executive Director Cris W. Dunham Jr. on Thursday notified the mayors of Grapevine, Euless and Irving that the Airport Board was “‘br inging legal action to obtain a declaratory judgment on the issue of responsibility for deciding who controls develop ment of D-FW Airport The three cities, responding to D-FW’s plans to construct two new runways as part of the $3.5 billion expansion plan, last fall adopted ordinances that require the airport to obtain city ap proval before undertaking any new construction projects. Near ly all of the airport’s 18,000 acres lie within the boundaries of the three cities. “The DFW Airport Board believes that it, not the cities of Euless, Grapevine and Irving, is responsible for the operation of DFW,” said Dunham in a press release Thursday. ‘‘While it is unfortunate that this issue must now be settled in a court of law, it is this board’s belief that the matter must be resolved with the utmost speed.”’ “That is just the opposite ef fect the airport’s action will have,”” said Grapevine Mayor Bill Tate at a hastily called press conference Thursday afternoon.
