In spite ol all remedies, his malady increased during the 6'.h and 7ih. On the 8th he felt somewhat better, and hopes were conceived. In the evening, however, the patient grew wotiy, and next morning *h* danger becoming mon urgent, the Holy Father himself demanded the Viaticum, which was immediately administered to him by Momignar Barbrlani, k some time afterwards Monsignor Soliu, Ihe Archbishop of Ephesus, his Holiness's Almoner, gave him the extreme unction. In the meanwhile Caidinal Bnne'ti, the Secretary of State communicated the melancholy tidings to Cardinal della Summaghia, the Dean ot the Sacred College, to Cardinal Zuala, the Vicar, and to »he diplomatic corps, when the former went in his grand costume to the Vatican, to ascertain the H-ate of the Pope personally. Cardinal Castigliwna, the Grand Penitentiary, visited the chamber of the august patient, and the theatre was ordered to be closed.
