John Henry W’hitfield started the Lions’ winning by taking the high hurdles event. Emmitt Whit-fieM ran second in the low hurdles.A. D. Whitfield and EddieGrate placed second and third in the 100-yard dash in what is reported to have been a photo finish. A runner from College: Station won this event, said that Whitfieldstart.A. D. Whitfield and EddieThornton took second and third place in the 220-yard dash. jTeam Captain L. K. McKinney j won the 440-yard dash to set anew District 7A record of 50 iseconds flat.A highlight of the meet was! the 440-yard relay. Eddie Thornton scratched for Lions, and took a short lead, McKinney ran the second leg and stretched the lead further, Grate ran third man and gained still more yardage, then Co-Captain A. 1). Whitfield brought home the win by 15 yards. Their time was 14.9 seconds.Hinton Jones and Frank Veailplaced second and third in theS80-yard run. Judge Horton and Janies Campbell ran the mile for the Lions.The main event of the day was the mile relay. The Lions were behind for the first two laps until Frank Veail took the baton for the third, and broughtthe team into the lead. L. E.McKinney anchored the relay with a 49.6 second quarter, and the team broke the old district record of 3.31 minutes with a 3.28 minutes.Bobbie Veail won the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet 6 inches. He took second in the high jump and broad jump.A. D. Whitfield won the shot put with a 47 feet record throw. Nolan Dixon took third in the discus throw with 119 feet, 8 inches.The Lionettes placed third in the meet and the Junior boysteam tied for first with the team from Caldwell. Redus Williams and Roger Kindred were outstanding on the junior team.Lela Kindred won the discus throw' for the Lionettes.Varsity Prom Awards.The Wilson White Varsity Prom was held Thursday of last week, and several awards were given outstanding students and athletes.Senior boys receiving awards included A. D. Whitfield, Eobby Wail and John L. Clark. Whitfield was all-district fullback. Veail was on the all-district football team and basketball team with an average of 19.5 pointsa game. Clark made the all-district basketball team and wasnoted for his play calling ability.Given honorable mention were L. E. McKinney, Richard Dixon, Eddy Thornton, Eddy Grate, Emmitt Whitfield and Hinton Jones.Wilson White Principal Troy Washington was given an award for his cooperation with the athletic program of the school.Certificates of honor were given to Larry Jackson, Viola Thomas, Molly Thomas, Charles Davis, Delores Garnett, and Nolan Dixon for placing in the literary events in their district.The Wilson White Octet—Nolan Dixon, Eddy Thornton, Vivian Jarmon, Jane Cagle, Dorothy Bailey, Mary Clark, Emmitt Whitfield and Fred Judy—willbe in the state meet singing contest. Washington directs the group.The annual junior-senior promwill be heltl in the school auditorium tonight.iIiCatholic DistrictMeeting Held InWestphalia April 9The Central District of the Catholic State League of Texas held its annual meeting in Westphalia on Sunday, April 9. Ben W. Kahlig, Westphalia District president, presided over the session. Delegates from Lott, Tours, Jarrell, Burlington, West, and Temple were present.State officers present were Mr. and Mrs. Joe A. Kraus of Dallas; Mr. Kraus is vice president of the Catholic Central Union. Felix .Stehling, grand vice president of the life insurance branch of the Catholic State League, of Fredericksburg, also attended. Representing the Catholic Womens I’nion was Mrs. Henrietta D. Galle of San Antonio. Anthony Jung, president of the Catholic Youth Organization of the Catholic State League of Texas, from Fredericksburg, was another state officer who attended.The guest speaker for themeeting vs as Edward F. Chiv-hart of Temple. Miss Carol Lange of Waco spoke on the Catholic Youth Organization; her topic was “What An Active CYO Means to Me.” Clergy present were Rt. Rev. R. 1*. Schertz and Rev. Leonard Buxkemper of W estphalia, and Rev. Ben Goertz of Burlington.S. J. Marturano of Temple, district rural life director, presented plaques to the winners ofthe Rural Life Essay contest.
