Aerial Mail Service Between East and West Coasts Un der Consideration; Land ing Ground on Mesa Here. Albuquerque is to be a station on a U.S. transcontinental air mail route, if tests prove that aerial mail service between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts is practicable at this time. H. B. Watkins received a telegram from Los Angeles yester day stating that Albuquerque is the chosen city of this section. The chamber of commerce has instructions to send daily weather reports to Los Angeles beginning today. Special information is de sired relative to prevailing wind directions and average and max mum velocities. Authorities state that the practically cloudless days of the Sunshine state should make fluing conditions deal, the only drawback being the mountainous nature of certain sections which makes landing dangerous and cre ates “air holes.” The state university has offered a big acreage of land on the mesa formerly used by the military for a drill and parade ground. Little leveling will be required. The Boy Scouts will meet Saturday morning at the chamber of commerce build ing with rakes and hoes and will proceed to the university, where they will put the landing ground in excellent condition. A white panel will be placed in the center of the field and one at each of the four corners. Test flights will be mae be tween here and Los Angeles and the time saved over the railroad schedule will be a great factor in determining whether the rate is practicable. The chamber of com mence has not yet been advised when the test flights will be made HBR. Watkins has been “pulling all the strings” known to get Albu querque placed on this transconti nental route and now feels wnsured that a station will be established here. Air mail service do now an es tablished facet between the larger cities of the east and the recent coast to coast antly return flight proved that the establishment of air mail communication between New York and Los Angeles is only all matter of time.
