Sparks fly as council refuses to discuss matter By Laura Pierce Chronicle Correspondent NAPAVINE — A Napavine City Council meeting erupted in fireworks Tuesday night, as the city attorney and spouses of two city employees verbally sparred and councilors asked for more information. The heated debate focused on city ac tions last month, when Napavine City Clerk LaVerne Haslett and Deputy Clerk Christy McNelly were placed on paid administrative leave for 30 days, for rea sons that remain confidential. City Attorney Dana Williams told The Chronicle earlier that an independent in vestigator was looking into the matter. Things began heating up at Tuesday’s meeting after City Councilor Pat Stafford asked that a request by Haslett and McNelly to address the council be put back on that night’s agenda. An ear lier council agenda indicated the clerks were going to make a public statement, but that item was lacking in a revised agenda for the Tuesday meeting. Stafford also asked for an update on the investigation. Napavmne Mayor Ruby Guido assured Stafford that councilors would be getting an update. However, it would be coming to them in written form. She also advised against discussing the matter during that night’s public meeting, stating it was a personnel mat ter and that it would be inappropriate to discuss in an open session. That was when a woman in the audi ence raised a question. “What about us?” she asked.
