FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (UPI) A woman charged with the murder of her husband claims he was a paid killer responsible for three union related murders, police said Friday. The woman was identified as Patti Lynn Bennett. Detectives in Delray Beach, Miami Beach and Dade County (Miami) said they hoped a warrant affidavit based on Mrs. Bennett’s statement would help them clear up the murders. The 26-year-old widow, described by a friend as a ‘‘quiet shy woman who could be described as sweet,” told police her husband, John Marcus Bennett, 35, was ‘‘in the business of being a hired killer’ and was murdered for “‘shooting his mouth off. Mrs. Bennett, who has denied killing her husband, said he was responsible for two deaths in 1968 and one in 1972 involving Joe Caleb, head of the 6,000-member Local 478 of the Laborers International Union. Mrs. Bennett said the 1968 cases were the bombing death of college student Joseph Georgianni, 21, a security guard at a union-disputed demolition site in Miami Beach, and the shooting death of Palm Beach County union leader Arnold Peluso. ‘We are very interested in the information,’’ a Dade County sheriff's spokesman said of the Caleb case. ‘We do put confidence in the information, but we aren’t finished with the case yet,” a detective added. A Deerfield Beach police spokesman said the department would not comment on the Peluso murder until the Broward County Sheriff’s Office gives them the go ahead. “They’ve asked us not to say anything, and since they’re doing 90 per cent of the work, we won't release any information until they clear it,’’ he said. ‘It is an old case for us and we'll be happy to have it cleared.’ Miami Beach police also said they were interested.
