EARL R. SCHARNHOFSTHawkeye - Earl RaymondScharnhorst was born In Windsor township, Hawkeye, on Aug* 22, 1914, the son of William and Tillie (Hyman) Scharnhorst, He attended Hawkeye schools graduating in 1933, During World War II he served with the 23rd naval construction battalion. He was a member of the Legion Post in Cedar Rapids.The latter years he had been employed as a postal employee in Cedar Rapids, moving to New Hampton last September. During the past year he had been hospitalized at various times. He died Mar. 30, 1972, in Veterans Hospital, Iowa City, of lung cancer at the age of 57 years.He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving him are one son, Leo of Oran; one daughter, Mrs, Robert (Betty) Baugh of Waterloo; one brother William of Hawkeye-, two sisters, Mrs. Mild-red Woodson of Hawkeye and Mrs, Robert (Mabel) Drewes of Sumner; and five grandchildren.Services were held Apr. 3 at the Emerson- Milnes FuneralChapel, Hawkeye, with the Rev. Edward Cass, officicating.Burial was in the Hawkeye Cemetery with the Arnold Rogers American Legion Post 312 in charge of the color guards and military taps.
