' . )W?WSaf»*g- H •' 7]BEFOREis putting 9-hole golfhe can start giving golf lessons, newly-hired Gene the finishing touches on the 9-hole golf course at the course at the Glen Canyon Country Club (SIGNALfoto)Moving right along with its plans to have a big spring opening, the Glen Canyon Country Club has hired a combination pro-greenskeeper to get the 9-hole grass golf course in shape.GENE REARS literally grew up on golf. His father was pro and greenskeeper before Gene was born. Gene, now 28, spent his boyhood and youth on the golfcourse.“I've never done anything else,” hesitates. His father is still active, employed by a club in Missouri, Gene’s native state.In the Valley of the Sun since 1935, young Bears has been employed by the Paradise Valley Country Club — both in its construction and in the pro shop. He also was associated with Johnny Bulla at the Century Country Club.BULLA, a - nationally known golfer, helped to lay out the course for the Glen Canyon Country Club, which lies west of Highway 89 below Manson Mesa, He is expected to be here for the opening' of the club. Bears is a “par shooter,” and he and Bulla may play.Bears came to Page directly from Tucson where he was pro at Par 3 and Driving Range.His first few weeks here will be devoted to getting the greens and fairways in shape. Most any time of the ’day the rangy golfer can be seen adjusting the sprinklers or working the small tractor at the course. ~THE FAIRWAYS are fairly smooth now and the course has a pretty good stand of grass. This is due to the efforts of club members who have worked evenings and weekends for the past two years getting it to this stage.Soon, Bears will be ready to start golf lessons, and he will give lessons by appointment to all ages. He will have equipment on hand to outfit any one properly, he says.The pro shop . is to be located in the country club building now under construction.Sand Devils Use Softball FieldThe Community Softball Field is being used by the Page High School Sand Devils baseball players until the school’s own field is completed.Meanwhile the Page Lions Club is delaying-^ the organization of a softball league.
