ZaTtTdUPOOXi.—Alarming and Destructive Explo- ; sign of Gas in a Dwelling house.—On Monday evening, ; about a quarter* past seven o’clock, an explosion of gas took ] place in a large unoccupied dwelling-house in Islington, corner of Salisbnry-street, which shattered the building to its foundation, blew outmost of the windows, and did other damage, to the great alarm of the neighbouring residents, and those who chanced to be in the vicinity. The front wall to Islington was completely bulged out, the string course of stone over the first story thrust out and disjointed in the middle, as well as the balcony over it in front of the drawingroom windows. The glass, and part of the frames of tke kitchen and parlour windows, were blown out, together with much of the glass in the higher story; and the pieces, in minute fragments, thickly strewed the wide street half way across. The iron railing in front was also Ijent outwards. The force of the explosion was, if possible, more apparent on the north or SaHsbury-street front, in which was the door, with a flight of apparently five stepB. The windows were much smashed, but, what i3 most remarkable, three of the i large lower steps of the entrance, within railings, were blown out of their places and upset, tearing with them and breaking a great part of the rails on each side, thus showing the peculiar strength of the explosion. It has been ascertained, siuce the explosion, that the house in which it occurred had been entered by thieves, the bells, and a portion of the water and gas-pipes, having been wrenched off and taken away, and a lead pump taken down preparatory to its removal; and as the concussion took place about a quarter-past seven, it is supposed it originated with the depredators haviDg obtained a light, the better to enable them to carry on their proceedings—a half-burnt lucifer match and a piece of burnt paper having been found on one of the chimney pieces. It may be right to mention, that when the former tenant left the house the gas was regularly turned off by the! gas company,1'as is usual in such cases.—LiverpooI Courier.
