By Eric Liles Contributing Winter Southlake — Carroll jumped in front of McKinney early with a five-run outburst in the first inning and cruised to a 10-4 victory over the McKinney Lions in a District 9-4A baseball game Friday at Dragon Field. The victory puts Carroll (15- 8, 3-1) into a first-place tie with Highland Park, a 4-3 winner over Coppell. McKin ney (11-8, 2-2) is now in a three-way tie for third with Grapevine and Colleyville Heritage. Dragons pitcher Trevor Tacker was the beneficiary of the generous offensive sup port. Tacker picked up the complete-game win, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out 12 “Those five runs were sup port runs,” Tacker said. “I knew I could settle down and not worry. It made it easier to concentrate.” Clutch hitting and baserun ning propelled Carroll to the first-inning rally. Austin Craw ford started things with a one out double that sailed over left fielder Brad Crisp’s head. Jer emy Sourbeer followed with a ball off the fists that fell for an infield single. One out later, a double steal put Crawford at third and Sourbeer on second. Kale Evans drew a walk to load the bases, then J.R. Trevino drove in Cran ford and Sourbeer with a single down the right field line for a 2- 0 lead. “We've got good hitters in spots one through nine,” Carroll head coach Larry Hughes said. “That weighs on a pitcher mentally, because he’s always having to struggle.” Alex Smith and Jason Harris added consecutive RBI singles to give Carroll a 4-0 lead. With Harris at first and Smith at third, Carroll again used the double steal as Smith came home for the fifth run. The Lions broke through for a run in the third when Gifford Dixon singled, advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and came home on Phillips’ RBI single to center field. But, Tucker took the run back for Carroll in the fifth with a 350-foot home run, putting the Dragons on top, 6-1. McKinney missed a chance to stage a comeback in the sixth. Jesse Gross led off with an in field single. With one out, Whit sell hit a chopper that bounced off CHS first baseman Joe Hen derson’s glove and into the out field. Gross moved to third on the play, then Price walked to load the bases. The Lions’ Bo Powell hit a sacrifice grounder to second base, bringing Gross home to cut the MHS deficit to 6-2, but Crisp grounded out to second to end the inning “We didn’t swing the bat well,” McKinney coach Randy Hales said. “We had a lot of called strikes. If (Tucker) threw it high, we'd swing at it. If he threw it low, we'd swing.” Carroll swung the bat well enough to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Har ris and Jason Cate hit con secutive singles with one out, then a passed ball moved them up before Amerman drew the walk to load the bases. Crawford picked up two RBI's with a double down the right field line, then Sourbeer drove in American with a line drive single past first base. Crawford moved to third on the play and, after the second out, scored as Evans hit a deep infield grounder and beat the throw to first as Carroll took a 10-2 lead. The Lions picked up two runs in the seventh as Dixon singled to right with one out, followed by Phillips’ RBI triple off the right field wall. Phil lips ran for home and scored when CHL catcher Brandon Lillard let the relay throw get past him. Tucker struck out Adam Smith and Whitsell to end the game. Carroll is at Coppell for a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday game
