By RUTH BISSEX Sunday Times Correspondent NORWOOD — Parents of Norwood School children are doing something to combat drug use among their children. They raised $3,500 to introduce a five-year drug education pro gram in the school The money, raised by the sale of candy, not only purchased the material kits for grades 4 through 8 but paid for substitute teachers to allow eight regular classroom teachers to attend training sessions. The course “Here’s Looking at You, Two” is recommended by the Delaware County Intermediate Unit and is in use in other county school. Local use is considered a pilot project for the Interboro District. “A school district cannot bite off $3,000 in October for a program,” Principal Ralph Bagnato said. “A school doesn’t live up to its responsibility if it provide information on pic,” to develop students’ attitudes so they can deal with the kinds of problems that lead to drug and alcohol abuse. Stress, poor grades, loss of a loved one, and growing older are some of those stressful areas listed by Bagnato. “Hopefully this program will help them deal with these,’ Bagnato said. Bagnato’s support of the new program which has to be worked into existing studies was echoed by 4th grade teacher Leslie Boll inger and health teacher Richard MacRone. “The ideal would be to start the program from kindergarten on up with the idea of making students feel good about themselves so they wont need drugs or alcohol for peer approval,” Bollinger said. “Children are very aware of drugs and alcohol use and availability,” Bollinger said. And, Bagnate acknowledged, this approach to drug education could also help those who would otherwise turn to suicide instead of drugs as a solution to their problems. Doing things for their children by supporting school efforts is a tradition at this school. The candy sales were used to buy extra computers when that programming , Home and School Association member Linda Blewis recalled. Circle Cova Sunday Times staff photo by BERT HODGE
