A Journey Through TimeMILWAUKEE — A walk through the Milwaukee Public Museum is a journey through time. It’s a nostalgic stroll through the gas-lighted brick streets of Old Milwaukee. It’s an eerie walk into the “senses cave” that glows with displays of devices that enable some animals to function in the dark. It’s a look at the mummified body of Thahir, a 16th Dynasty priest who diedBy Bill KnutsonPost-Crescenf Staff Writerabout 1680 B.C. And it’s an examination of a rock that lay on the moon’s surface for 100 million years — until it was plucked by Apollo 11 crewmen last year. The Milwaukee Public Museum is about history before it was • even recorded. It’s about today and tomorrow. And it’s about the world and beyond. The museum, the fourth largest natural history museum in the United States, is an ideal place to spend a relaxing and educational day with the entire family. There is no admission charge.Located downtown, at 800 W. Wells St., the huge new facility is easily accessible from the freeway which runs into the heart of the city.Winter hours at the museum are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Thursday, ■when hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Summer hours, starting in June, will be-from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.Has More to OfferThose who had visited the old museums, which was near Marquette University, will find that the new facility has much more to offer.Although most of the new museum is open, parts of the third floor, where visitors will be able to “tour the world,” remain under construction.Third floor displays dealing with Central and South American culturesj have just been opened. Other parts of the third floor, where exhibits will deal with Eskimo, Asian and African cultures along with a “sea-o-rama,” will open in phases over the next three years. In contrast to the old museum, exhibits in the new facility are set up to offer an orderly tour. The first floor is labeled “A Trip Through Time and Space.” The visitor is greeted in this initial phase of the museum tour by a 2214-foot long model of a stegosaurus.Rock, mineral and fossil displays trace the development of the earth and its inhabitants through the ages of reptiles and men.Religious concepts developed by man are illustrated in another first floor section as the visitor is guided through the rise of civilization. The trip through time finally reaches the New World, where displays trace the history and development of this country.Gun CollectionAlso on the first floor is a mammouth collection of guns from all over the world,Continued On Page 2/ / APost-Crescent PhotosIndians chase buffalo through a Milwaukee Museum diorama.
