‘Wilberforce Prof. Publishes Book on0The Negro PressWILBERFORCE, O., April 12.—After 26 years since the last book on the Negro press was published, here comes at last another one — authoritatively challenging, critically constructive, delightfully compact, and refreshingly honest. “The Negro Newspaper” by Dr. Vishu V. Oakfi professor of business administration and economics at Wilberforce university, is the first of a series to be published under the general title of “The Negro Enterpreneur.”This long needed book points out how the Negro press has aided in the preservation of American democracy by revealing how democracy actually operates in American society.The author points out how Negro newspapers, by a united attack upon discrimination, segregation, and race prejudice, have brought to the attention of the nation the injustices suffered by 1-10 of the nation’s population even though we have been proclaiming strenuously to the world the virtues of our so-called dem-ocratic way of life.The author calls attention to the fact that, with all their service, much more could have been accomplished if these newspapers had followed more closely the thics of the profession. The rabid sensationalism, inconsistent presentation of race ideals, tendency 10 sell their pages to the support of unholy causes, inept selection and exploitation of news items, and Quislingism are some of the faults of the Negro- press.In addition to the general evaluation of the Negro press as a socializing agency, there are well authenticated chapters on the history of Negro journalism, the functioning of the Negro newspaper, news gathering agencies, advertising in the Negro press, (continued on page 4)t!I
